How will Mātai impact the health of our whanau in Gisborne-Tairāwhiti?
Our whānau and our community will have access to better equipment and expertise, resulting in earlier diagnosis and earlier treatments, ultimately leading to a better quality of life.
Through our collaboration with Iwi, our goals and priorities will be closely aligned with those of our community.
Understanding Māori/Community Health
We will support community research into studies on health issues prevalent to Māori. Our equipment will enable high-end imaging of diseases that affect soft tissue, including heart disease, kidney and liver disease. This will open important opportunities for researchers and clinicians to establish early biomarkers of these diseases and enable early intervention in our underserved population.
Earlier Diagnosis/Improved Prognosis/Treatment
Using the advanced features of our 3T MRI machine and in-house/collaborative expertise, Mātai Lab can support collaborative, community or external research projects around a range of other health issues that affect our community, including those related to obesity (Type 2 diabetes, mellitus, hypertension, dyslipidema, gallbladder disease, hyperuricemia and gout, ischaemic heart disease, stroke, several common cancers, osteoarthritis, musculoskeletal injury, sleep apnoea and reproductive abnormalities). These conditions impact the length and quality of life of our whānau.
