Inspiring Our Tamariki
As we grow, Mātai Lab will run open days and training courses for local school students. Roadshows that reach out to our many smaller rural schools will be included in the programmes. This will help encourage our children to understand the potential opportunities offered in medical science and encourage STEM learning.
Programmes will include teaching brain anatomy, introductory brain imaging, and mechanisms of brain injury. Students will learn first-hand about the interface between imaging, engineering and physiology through a series of lectures and interactive laboratories in which they get to see the changes in brain structure and function on imaging resulting from different physiological challenges.
Teachers will be invited to attend the summer programme as participants/observers. They will explore how these activities can be taught to high school students and begin to formulate plans for including these experiences in their own classes.
BEING BRAINY TEACHING PROGRAMMES

Mātai will develop opportunities for masters and doctoral students and summer research studentships, including exchange opportunity/scholarships at undergraduate and postgraduate level with Stanford University and other overseas institutions.
Scholarship programmes for local high-school students will be established in the coming years. This will include mentoring by Mātai scientists.
LOCAL WORKFORCE & STUDENT DEVELOPMENT
Courses will be developed and conducted through professional development and education programmes (including work experience, scholarships and internships for school students and emerging scientists and clinicians).
As an example, Mātai Lab will provide an advanced brain and heart imaging course that includes advanced imaging acquisition and image post-processing methods. With a strong clinical and translational focus, these courses will be attractive to technicians, clinicians, scientists and local and national students.
